GreenThumbs is a shared calendar/planner specifically with the Pandora Park Community Garden in mind. Using the tasks already established, GreenThumbs strengthens the community by getting rid of any frustrations from previous organizing systems.

Pandora Park Community Garden Society was formed in early 2009 by a group of people from the Hastings Sunrise area of Vancouver. They have now grown to over 65 members with their goals still fresh in mind:

  • Provide an opportunity for local residents to grow affordable organic produce, flowers and herbs;

  • Provide an informal, safe environment and occasion for horticultural, social, educational and community interaction between gardeners and between the gardeners and the public, to build community in the Hastings Sunrise area;

  • Provide an opportunity for environmentally sound organic food production, given that locally grown food can help mitigate the process of global warming through the emission of transportation-related greenhouse gases;

  • Add to the aesthetics of the surrounding community.

Client Feedback

Student Project - Professor Kozak

This was an excellent project. You did a good job of bringing the broad scope of your research into a specific context at Pandora Park and then doing an additional round of research to get to know that site and group of users a bit better.

Improved Communication

If users are still confused, they can hop right over to the "Community" page. This page is an open communication page for the garden's users, where they have 2 specific channel groups. In the first channel, the chats range from:

Priorities - The main garden overseer prioritizes tasks for the current month

General - For any conversation users want to have, rules, tools, and pictures.

The second channel is specifically regarding conversations about the garden tasks. So if any specific questions weren’t answered on the task page, users can ask for help from specific people who are more knowledgeable about those tasks.

Organized Tasks

The "Tasks" page has a birds-eye view of the garden in simplified shapes to identify the garden borders clearly, along with a table of the garden tasks and their needs. This page makes it easier for users to make sure they know what they’re doing since Pandora has very specific instructions for maintenance.

Understanding the Challenges

Understanding the Challenges

First, I had to understand what the current tracking resources are for community gardens. This included other gardens aside from Pandora Park. Based on what is shown in the image below, Pandora Park uses a task list to help users understand how many people need to be on a certain task. How people form teams is unknown as of right now. Strathcona Community Garden uses Google Forms to record each individual's work hours. Both these methods are archaic ways to track and delegate tasks.

Lack of communication amongst gardeners lowers morale when working in the garden, and can lead to cliques and a divided community. Lack of information on what maintenance the garden needs and how things should be done can be frustrating for newer members and can dissuade potential members from joining. And last but not least, due to issues with logging work hours, members lose motivation to help maintain the common garden space. As such, the purpose of Greenthumbs is to improve communication and open up mentorship when help is needed. I used two competitors to help with the design of the app.

Understanding how users will interact with the app was my next concern. How would someone start using GreenThumb? What do they need as motivation to continue using the application? This user Journey highlights what features and tools would be most helpful when encouraging and integrating a new member to the garden.

This project has become one of my first fully functioning prototype projects. I went through a massive learning curve using components and understanding how to make short animations with them. With the help of Figma's community, I was able to utilize already existing components, tweaking them to fit the application.

1) Efficient Planning

The competitor TimeTree's Events page largely influenced GreenThumb's own Events page after a user-testing result confirmed this layout's superiority over other layouts. In a calendar format, garden communities will be able to see a collective plan of the next month's work.

GreenThumb’s texting page was largely inspired by Discord's texting layout because it worked well with the tools needed for the Communication page. Each communication page is specifically created with the purpose of encouragement, mentorship, and alerts.

Working on GreenThumbs was a true pleasure. This was one of my first projects where I tried fleshing out from simple aesthetics. I worked on UX/UI systems continuously to understand what is truly needed from the community and not what I wanted. Despite this, I was unable to get true insight from the gardeners themselves, which is a true shame since their insight would have furthered this project even more.

GreenThumbs is more than just a gardening app; it embodies a thriving community of individuals united by a shared passion for cultivating growth. Through each of its functions, this app provides a comprehensive platform for efficient planning, transparent communication, and simple organization. And so, looking ahead, the future of GreenThumbs holds exciting possibilities as I envision the app extending its roots beyond Pandora Park Community Garden. I hope that GreenThumbs will be able to grow into a public network where gardening communities in Vancouver and beyond can adapt the app to their own unique needs.
